The time has come to legally and aggressively address the state's hoarding of Maui County taxes. We have watched for too many years as the state extends its control over more of what should be county jurisdiction, and in contrast of the voice of the people. Mauna Kea and the TMT is an unfortunate example of such.
One of the most blatant examples of State overreach is the confiscation of Maui County's collected Transit Accommodation Tax, which is a tax added to hotel rooms, condo rentals, and vacation rentals. Although we, as a county, welcome 30+% of the tourists, we are regulated to only keep 13% of the TAT, and right now, the state is considering returning even less.
